Alien: Romulus, the long-awaited new chapter of the saga inaugurated in 1979 by the legendary film by Ridley Scott, is preparing to bring the deadliest creature in the universe back to the big screen. The film, directed by Fede Álvarez, will arrive in cinemas next summer and seems destined to bring a breath of fresh air to the franchise. David Jonsson, the face of one of the new protagonists, is convinced of this, and in a recent interview released for MovieWeb he anticipated how Alien: Romulus will propose a decidedly different approach from that already seen in the previous films of the franchise:
«I'm not sure what I can say yet, but I know that… I know that it's very, very, very different. Alien came a little bit before my generation, in terms of the depth and the impact it had at the time, but you know, I think our movie is going to be an incredible breakthrough. And we had Fede Álvarez as director and Ridley Scott as producer. It was incredible to work with these people and also to act alongside Cailee Spaeny, who is a brilliant actress. I think it's going to be great. I'm really very excited."
The story of Alien: Romulus is still under the strictest secrecy. However, it has been confirmed that the plot will be set between the events of the original Alien film and its legendary sequel Aliens – The Final Clash, whose events are separated by 57 years. The bare preliminary synopsis of the new chapter reads as follows:
The film will follow the events of a group of young people in a distant world who will find themselves confronted with the most terrifying life form in the universe. Alien: Romulus was directed by Uruguayan director Fede Álvarez, who also wrote the screenplay alongside Rodo Sayagues. Álvarez, also credited as a producer, became known to the public for directing the remake of La Casa (2013), Man in the Dark (2016) and Millennium (2018).
As is now tradition, the film will have a female protagonist played by Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla, Easttown Murder). She will be joined by other young actors such as David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Darkness and Bones), Isabela Merced (Rosaline), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Ridley Scott was involved as an executive producer through his production studio Scott Free Productions, supported in turn by Michael Pruss, Brent O'Connor, Elizabeth Cantillon, and Tom Moran. Filming for the film took place from March 9 to July 3, 2023, at Origo Studios in Budapest.
