Tim Burton has revealed that his long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel, titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, was inspired by his personal journey "from cool teenager to nerdy adult". The original film was directed by Burton in 1988 and arrived in Italy with the title Beetlejuice. The original Beetlejuice has grossed nearly $75 million worldwide since its release and won an Oscar for Best Makeup. The original film followed a recently deceased couple (played by Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) who contacted the spirit Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to scare the family who had just moved into their old house. Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara played the mother and daughter of the family in question.

Tim Burton has revealed that the plot of the sequel, which will hit theaters in September, is set decades after the first film and begins with a death that brings the whole family together. We don't know anything else at the moment. “That's all I'll say,” Burton told Entertainment Weekly in a new interview. “There's something that happens that sets things in motion.” The director, 65, told the magazine that putting Keaton back in the iconic costume and makeup was "a strange out-of-body experience."

This is what Tim Burton said: “He got right back into the role, back to work. It was a little scary for someone who maybe wasn't particularly interested in making the film. It was such a beautiful thing for me to see all the cast, but him especially, as if he were possessed by a demon, he went right back to work." He added that he and Michael Keaton had been discussing making a Beetlejuice sequel for years, but that "unless it felt right to him, he had no desire to do it."

Burton continued: “I think we all felt the same way. It only made sense if it had an emotional connection.” They found this hook in the character of Astrid, played by Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, the daughter of Ryder's character, Lydia, and granddaughter of O'Hara's Delia. “I so identified with the character of Lydia. She takes you back, to your personal journey, when you go from cool teenager to nerdy adult, a journey through time. That made it exciting and gave it a base. So that was the thing that really got me emotionally involved and pushed me to say yes.”
