The name of the new interpreter of Immortan Joe in the long-awaited prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, entitled Furiosa, has been revealed. The actor chosen for the role is Lachy Hulme, as reported by Empire.

Hulme was originally selected to play the character Rizzdale Pell in Furiosa, a gang member associated with Dementus in the film. However, halfway through filming, Hulme argued with director George Miller about plans for Immortan Joe. Later, he offered to play this last role, in addition to the one already assigned to him. Hulme explained his decision to accept the role of Immortan Joe during filming:

“I said, 'Well, someone has to step up for Hugh. Someone must honor this great man. I can do it. I can do the voice. And it's all in the eyes." He said, ‘Do you want to do it?’ I said, “What took you so long?” You've finally realized that this film won't make a dollar until you're double Lachy Hulme!' Immortan Joe was previously played by Hugh Keays-Byrne in Mad Max: Fury Road, but the legendary actor sadly passed away on December 1, 2020, at the age of 73.

With Hulme now taking on a dual role in the film, he is expected to bring a new dynamism to the character in Furiosa. Furiosa also marks another major recast in the cast, with Anya Taylor-Joy taking over the lead role previously played by Charlize Theron. This choice initially sparked some controversy, but it has been argued that Furiosa will be a coming-of-age story, offering a different perspective on the character.
