Bill Murray didn't hesitate for a second before putting his signature on the contract for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. For several years the actor avoided returning to the historic franchise, thus blocking potential sequels to Ghostbusters II. However, Murray returned to play a new character in the 2016 reboot and reprised the role of Peter Venkman in 2021's Ghostbusters: Legacy. In a new interview with Collider, director Gil Kenan was asked if there were any difficulties convincing Murray to sign the contract for the latest installment of the franchise, given his reputation as a "loose cannon." However, Kenan said that Bill Murray was immediately enthusiastic about being involved in the sequel, also thanks to his friendship with the director.

“Well, you know very well that Bill and I have a history [laughs] because we made a movie together in 2007, a movie that almost cost you your life,” Kenan said. “This was the Hall H experience and we won't go into too much detail. But it opened the door for Bill and me to have a relationship that has remained dynamic over the years. We remained friends, and we stayed in touch. When I contacted him to tell him that we were creating a story for Peter Venkman in this film, he was really excited."

He added: “What I learned by entering this world from the outside, as a fan entering the Ghostbusters ring, is that, in reality, these legendary actors who can be approached with reverence because they changed the course of our cinema they live, they love their characters. They love these stories so much. For them, it is truly a gesture of affection every time they wear the suit. Even though they complain about wearing those proton packs, they really love doing it because it's central to their identity as stars and as characters who connect with audiences around the world.” Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will arrive in cinemas on April 11, 2024, produced by Sony Pictures and distributed by Eagle Pictures.
