While Lillard is excited about him returning as Shaggy, other actors from the original Scooby-Doo cast seem less positive. Matthew Lillard, the actor who gave voice to Shaggy Rogers in the Scooby-Doo franchise, has confirmed his return to the role for an upcoming project linked to the animated series.

What projects are in the works for the Scooby-Doo franchise?

After debuting as Shaggy in the 2002 film, Lillard became the character's voice, voicing him in numerous subsequent projects, including films and animated series. In a recent interview with Toonado, Lillard revealed that he's involved in a new Scooby-Doo project, though he didn't provide specific details about the project. “I'm really excited about Scooby-Doo. I can't talk about it yet, but there's a new project I'm associated with that will allow kids to immerse themselves in a Scooby-Doo adventure,” Lillard said. “It's super fun. For me, this is my day job. It's my daily bread.” Lillard also discussed his connection to the character of Shaggy and his desire to honor the previous work of Casey Kasem, the original voice of Shaggy. He underlined the importance of passing the baton to a new generation of viewers, paying tribute to Kasem's contribution.

“For me, being Shaggy in Scooby-Doo for so many years and having space for that part by honoring Casey Kasem, I know that I will eventually pass that part on to the next generation like he did,” Lillard said. While Lillard is excited about him returning as Shaggy, other actors from the original Scooby-Doo cast seem less inclined to reprise their roles. Freddie Prinze Jr., who played Fred in the 2002 film and its sequel, said he was not interested in returning for a third film, criticizing the way the studio handled the production of the previous films.
