Steven Spielberg, who directed the first film in 2018, confirms his involvement in Ready Player Two as a producer. Based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Cline, who adapted it to the screen together with Zak Penn, the science fiction film is set in a dystopian future where people use a virtual reality known as the OASIS to escape reality. The Ready Player One cast included Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, TJ Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. Speaking with Showbiz 411 at the Universal Pictures gala following the 2024 Oscars, Spielberg provided an update on his upcoming projects. The legendary director won't have anything in production in 2024: “We're in the discovery phase, trying to figure out what's next.” However, Spielberg has shared an update on Ready Player Two, confirming that he will be involved in the sequel as a producer.
Ready Player One grossed over $607 million at the global box office in 2018 and immediately spurred discussions about a potential sequel, which resumed in 2020 when Ernest Cline published his sequel novel, aptly titled Ready Player Two. Shortly thereafter the author announced that a film adaptation was in the early stages of development. Despite Cline's comment, along with Spielberg's confirmation of his involvement as a producer, the film has not officially received the green light from Warner Bros.
Spielberg's involvement in Ready Player Two, even if only as a producer, is somewhat surprising considering that, generally, the director has always been against sequels, outside of those of the Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park sagas. However, he often produces projects without being very directly involved in their development, recent examples are Maestro, The Color Purple, Halo, and Masters of the Air. We'll see how the issue evolves.
