Although the president of Marvel Studios closed down the possibility last December, Robert Downey Jr does not rule out his possible return to the MCU in the role of Tony Stark again, aka Iron Man. The actor, fresh from winning the 2024 Oscars in the Best Actor category supporting actor for his performance in Oppenheimer, he once again reiterated how much the superhero was a fundamental part of his career.
Will Robert Downey Jr. return as Iron Man in the MCU? The actor's statements
Interviewed by Esquire, Robert Downey Jr. admitted, without too many frills, that he would be happy at the idea of being able to take on the role of Iron Man again. “With joy. It's too fundamental a part of my DNA. That role chose me. He will always say: 'Never, truly never, bet against Kevin Feige.' This is a losing bet from the start. He is the house and will always win,” declared the star. Tony Stark, we remind you, left the scene in Avengers: Endgame, sacrificing himself to definitively defeat the evil Thanos.
As mentioned at the beginning, a few months ago the president of Marvel Studios said he was very skeptical about Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “We will keep that moment protected, and we will never touch it again (referring to Iron Man's death in Avengers: Endgame). We have all worked so hard for many years to get to this point, and we would never want to magically undo it for any reason." Will he change his mind? Only time will tell.
