The film, directed once again by Todd Phillips, will see the return of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and the addition of Lady Gaga in the role of Harley Quinn. The new film about the well-known Batman villain will make its debut in cinemas on 2 October 2024. As already revealed by the director, this second film will be a jukebox musical that will contain covers of 15 famous songs, as well as some original songs specifically designed for the movie. The official plot of the film has not yet been revealed, but from the teaser trailer, we can guess that it will be set mainly inside Arkham Asylum, the famous criminal asylum in Gotham City.
Here is the official teaser trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux:
As reported by Variety, the film stands out for being a jukebox musical, with at least 15 famous songs reinterpreted, including That's Entertainment from the 1953 musical The Band Wagon. The stellar cast sees the return of Joaquin Phoenix together with Zazie Beetz (Atlanta ), and Lady Gaga and Oscar nominees Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson. With a budget of nearly $200 million, the film promises to be one of the most sensational cinematic events of the year. Specific plot details have not been officially confirmed. Obviously, at the center of the story, there will be Arthur Fleck, now a patient in the psychiatric sector of Arkham prison, and his psychiatrist, Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
Folie à Deux's predecessor achieved extraordinary success, winning the Golden Lion in Venice and grossing over a billion dollars globally, as well as receiving 11 Oscar nominations and two Academy Awards for Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Soundtrack to Hildur Guðnadóttir. Some sources suggest that the Todd Phillips-directed sequel could debut during this year's Venice Film Festival. The appointment is set for October 2nd when Joker: Folie à Deux will arrive in cinemas.
Director Todd Phillips' independent and original Joker origin story explores the world of – and from the point of view of – Arthur Fleck. Played unforgettably by Joaquin Phoenix, Arthur struggles to find his way in a fractured society like that of Gotham City. During the day he works as a clown, at night he tries to be a cabaret comedian... but he discovers that he seems to be the laughingstock.
Arthur, devoted to his mother's care, searches for any father figure, having never had one; from the wealthy businessman Thomas Wayne to the TV host Murray Franklin. Trapped in a cyclical existence always balanced between apathy and cruelty, Arthur will make a wrong decision that will cause a chain reaction of events, useful for the crude analysis of this character.
