Disney has revealed a new look at the long-awaited Moana 2, the sequel to the 2016 Oscar-nominated animated film. This new adventure will bring back fan-favorite characters Moana and Maui for another extraordinary ocean adventure. The company, known for its ability to capitalize on popular franchises, is further expanding the world of Moana. In addition to the animated sequel, a live-action version titled Moana is also in development. The initial teaser for Moana 2 was released earlier this year, sparking much excitement among fans. And now, during Disney's 2024 annual shareholder meeting, a new image has been revealed.
In the new image, we see a determined Moana as she sails, with a majestic sea creature in the background. Initially, the sequel was planned as a TV series for Disney+. However, Disney opted to bring Moana back to the big screen, demonstrating confidence in the franchise's potential. Moana 2 director Dave Derrick Jr. will work with a team of talented composers, including Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa'i, and Mark Mancina, to bring the magic of Polynesian music to life.
Meanwhile, Disney has announced that Dwayne The Rock Johnson, the original voice of Maui, will return to the role for both Moana 2 and the live-action Moana film. Johnson expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to advance Moana's story and honor Polynesian culture through film. The live-action Moana, directed by Hamilton's Thomas Kail, promises to be a tribute to the culture and history of the Polynesian people. The film will be produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Beau Flynn, with Auli'i Cravalho reprising her role as Moana.
