Director Sam Raimi has finally responded to rumors about his possible return to the Spider-Man franchise, revealing that he, for the moment, has no plans for any film about the Marvel hero. Ever since actor Tobey Maguire entered the MCU in the Spider-Man: No Way Home crossover, and ever since Sam Raimi directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans have been begging to know if he'll ever have a reunion between the two for a fourth Spider-Man film.
The director, interviewed at WonderCon, said that he has heard the rumors about Spider-Man 4, but that he is not sure if Marvel would be interested in his return: "I read that the fans want me, but in reality, there is no I'm still working. I mean, Marvel is so successful with the current Spider-Man that I don't know if they'll come back to me. I'm not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really cool to see Tobey again!”
Sam Raimi directed 2002's Spider-Man, the 2004 sequel, and 2007's third installment, all starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson. The director returned to the Marvel universe in 2022, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. On the possibility of Maguire being available for a fourth film, he said: “I haven't talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has. But I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so I'm on great terms with them. I'm sure I'd hear about it if it was in the works.”
Fans have good reason to hope for a fourth Spider-Man movie. In 2022, Raimi stated that he was open to working with Maguire and Dunst again. “After making Doctor Strange, I realized that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team,” he said. “I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don't really have a story or a plan. I don't know if Marvel would be interested at this time. I don't know what their thoughts are on that. But it looks beautiful. Even if it wasn't a Spider-Man movie, I would love to work with Tobey again, in a different role."
