Colin Farrell debuted as Penguin in The Batman (2022), and captivated audiences with his portrayal of the iconic DC Comics villain. His work as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot paved the way for his reprisal of the role in an upcoming Max series titled The Penguin, set to air on the streaming service later this year.

Farrell recently spoke with MovieWeb about his role in Sugar, and the conversation naturally drifted toward his favorite characters in the Batman universe. The actor expressed his admiration for Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight, stating: “My favorite Batman actors or movies… I mean, Heath. Heath has the upper hand, you know.” However, Farrell also acknowledged his appreciation for other performances, adding: “I mean, I don't want to sit on the fence, but I've enjoyed so many. I also love Jack [Nicholson] as the Joker.” Not, therefore, his co-star Robert Pattinson as his favorite actor in the history of franchises?

The Penguin and Colin Farrell, a love story with the world of Batman

Reflecting on the enduring appeal of Batman's rogues' gallery, Farrell cited Christian Bale's perspective on multiple interpretations of DC characters: “And these folklore characters were initially so well drawn that they endure. It was like Christian Bale was asked a question once, I saw, about the new Batman that was coming and Robert [Pattinson] playing Batman, and Christian said something like, and I paraphrase, that these characters, they survive and invite multiple interpretations.” As you might expect, Farrell has been diplomatic on the topic of who he believes is the best Dark Knight, especially considering his recent work with Robert Pattinson in The Batman. However, he confessed a particular affection for Michael Keaton's Batman, saying: "I have a soft spot for Michael Keaton because I was about 10 or 11 when I saw him, and I was just obsessed with him, you know?"

When is The Penguin coming to Max?

During a recent fourth-quarter earnings conference call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav provided an update on The Penguin, hinting at its release date. His comments logically place a premiere in 2024. Mare Of Easttown director Craig Zobel will direct the first two episodes, with Lauren LeFranc (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Chuck) overseeing the project as writer and showrunner. Colin Farrell serves as an executive producer on the series alongside The Batman director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark.
