They promised us a sequel to The Pope's Exorcist with Russell Crowe, but it looks like we'll be getting a trilogy instead.

Oscar-winner Russell Crowe plays exorcist Gabriele Amorth in Julius Avery's The Pope's Exorcist, which grossed an impressive $76 million in theaters last year and topped the streaming charts soon after. It was reported that Screen Gems was working on a sequel, but what's the latest news on that? In a recent chat with Virgin Media Television's The Six O'Clock Show, Russell Crowe himself provided a new update on the future of The Exorcist.
It seems that a trilogy was originally planned by Screen Gems, but a change in studio heads put everything on hold. As Crowe explained, when asked if he would reprise the role of Gabriele Amorth: “That's up for debate at the moment. The original producers… originally got the green light from the studio for not just one sequel but two. But there's been a change of studio directors at the moment, so it's on hold, but it will definitely happen." “We set up that character so you could take him out and put him in a lot of different circumstances,” Crowe continued.
“And remember that the man it is based on, Gabriele Amorth, wrote twelve books. So we have more than enough material to make a movie or two. But we probably won't know for sure until next year." In other words, it seems likely that The Pope's Exorcist 2 will eventually happen, but it may take a while before we get the next update. Recall that the film is based on the real-life of the exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth, “the legendary Italian priest who performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican”.
