The cliché of the American high school prom has inspired generations of teenagers on screen: from emotional confessions of love to the coronation of the king and queen, accompanied by the classic shocking revelations that precede one of the biggest milestones in a high schooler’s life.

Yet among the meticulously placed spotlights, colorful balloons, and slow dances between sweethearts, one high school prom stands above the rest as a seminal horror classic: Brian De Palma’s iconic sequence in 1976’s Carrie. Forget romance, rites of passage, and shimmering dresses—when Carrie is crowned prom queen, a bucket of pig’s blood dumps over her head, triggering one of the most famous set pieces in cinematic history.

The sheer weight of that legendary legacy deeply intimidated Mike Flanagan as he set out to develop the television adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel for Prime Video.

The Prom Sequence Was the Most Complex of Flanagan’s Career

In 1976, Sissy Spacek wore a white slip dress and a prom tiara during Carrie’s tragic climax. Her long blonde hair and angelic appearance quickly transformed following the iconic “blood bath,” setting off her telekinetic rampage against her bullies and exposing the terrifying magnitude of her abilities to the entire school.

In 2026, the responsibility fell on Flanagan to recreate that cathartic moment as it explodes into tragedy:

“That scene started haunting my dreams,” the director and showrunner revealed to IndieWire. “It turned out to be logistically the most complex and elaborate sequence of my entire career, by far. It was brutal, but getting to spend 10 days on set at the prom with Carrie White is something I will cherish forever.”

The most iconic beats of the entire story last roughly 90 seconds. Yet that minute and a half presented immense logistical hurdles for the Prime Video team:

“It’s not a long event. She gets hit with the blood. Chris and Billy run away, and she follows them. That’s what happens. Everything else happening around it, we expand on. But the core event itself isn’t prolonged. So, how do we earn that impact and set it up properly? That was the core challenge.”

    Expanding the Mythology of Carrie

With Carrie officially renewed for a second season on Prime Video, the narrative will continue to expand the mythology of Stephen King’s iconic character. Flanagan took a similar approach when constructing the prom sequence, aiming to stretch out the scope of the disaster while actively avoiding a shot-for-shot recreation of De Palma’s camera movements. Subsequent adaptations, according to the creator, relied far too heavily on De Palma’s visual language, which felt ill-suited for a modern television format.

Flanagan meticulously pre-planned his shot list weeks and months in advance alongside his longtime director of photography, Michael Fimognari. The entire prom sequence was mapped out on a whiteboard roughly five months before cameras rolled. Every detail had its precise place, down to the needle drop:

“I used to take long walks around my house in Los Angeles, listening to that Lana Del Rey track (‘Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd’) and visualizing that exact montage,” Flanagan shared.

Translating that vision to the set required coordinating multiple moving parts: shifting frame rates from standard speed to slow motion mapped to the tempo of the music, specific lighting cues to highlight the actors’ expressions, and complex blocking synchronized with both the track’s rhythm and frame-rate transitions.

The Moment Every Fan Awaited: The “Blood Bath”

Few cinematic moments carry the weight of Carrie’s post-coronation scene. The moment the bucket of pig’s blood drops, her dream shatters, transforming a moment of long-sought acceptance into a terrifying breakdown. Capturing that descent on screen was no easy feat.

The moment Carrie is drenched in pig’s blood occurs from above in full view of the gymnasium. The production team engineered elaborate workarounds, running drop tests with crew members and stunt doubles using a tennis ball suspended from a rope as a visual marker. The trick ensured the liquid landed squarely on lead actress Summer H. Howell every time:

“Even then, we needed multiple angles, and you could only frame one or two people at a time, so we knew we had to execute at least three separate drop takes,” Flanagan explained.

Selecting the fake blood formula was equally tricky. Flanagan noted that the liquid poured from above required a different consistency than the blood painted directly onto Howell’s face, which couldn’t run or streak. Furthermore, the drop sequence had to be scheduled exclusively at the end of the shooting day:

“Once Summer got hit, that was it for her for the day. We couldn’t just wash her off and reset,” Flanagan noted.

Living the Prom Night Alongside Carrie White

Working with liquids naturally introduces chaos, requiring VFX touch-ups for select frames. Once the blood drop was captured, the team shifted focus to scenes showcasing Carrie unleashing her telekinetic powers. While Carrie’s levitation was achieved using practical wirework, the electrical surge striking Principal Grayle (Matthew Lillard) proved more challenging to calibrate:

“Mike wanted a glow coming from her eyes and far more electrical arcs leaping off her fingers,” explained VFX supervisor Becky Philpott. “We ran a test, and it looked very Marvel, very superhero—it was simply too much. So every time we reviewed it, we dialed the effect back until we reached a sweet spot where it didn’t feel cheesy.”

Through endless trial and error, the final sequence landed on Prime Video to strong critical acclaim.

For Mike Flanagan, the set piece remains an unmatched career milestone:

“It stands as the single craziest, most intense, and logistically difficult sequence of my career—and that includes the midnight mass sequence in ‘Midnight Mass’… It’s truly something special.”
